Somatic Yoga is a movement therapy that is accessible to everyone. Many mitigate persistent stress, physical and emotional pain, stiffness, and postural imbalances with this subtle practice. By observing the brain to muscle behaviors we may be able to mindfully re-educate the patterns and have long-lasting and immediate results. Modifications and alterations will be offered. Feel free to have family and caretakers join as well. We will finish the last portion of the class in a resting pose with a guided sound bowl meditation.

This class is the more advanced version of Buff Bones. Sixty minutes in length, this class will address the mind and body with breathwork and flow from lower body to upper body to the floor followed by a cool down. Weight-bearing exercises will be performed. Please have a set of weights or resistance bands that are appropriate for your fitness level (light to medium). Participants must be able to work from the floor. Modifications for various conditions and fitness levels will be provided.

Note: Blending gentle movement, breathing and relaxation you'll learn movements that stretch, strengthen, relax muscles and increase stamina and flexibility. Instructor: Anita Mahava. Please bring a blanket and a small towel. Masks are required. Registration and a signed Physical Activity Waiver is required for each previously unattended class. Participants who are more than 2 years out of completing active treatment (chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, targeted therapies, and immunotherapies) are encouraged to consider making a donation of $5 per class. Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music to further development, emotional, physical, and social goals in an individual. Music therapy can help support the physical and psycho-social needs of patients and family members who are dealing with cancer. This weekly group will offer the opportunity to discover how the healing nature of rhythm and sound can be integrated into your cancer experience. Sessions may include music meditation, guided visualization, live improvisation, drumming, toning, song writing and song sensation. Join this 6-week 60-minute class that will provide positive encouragement, social support, and the exercise guidance needed to maintain muscles, promote better posture and movement, reduce stress, fight fatigue, and improves outcomes. The class will incorporate dynamic stretches, strengthening-based moves, and core exercises, followed by a cool-down that leaves you feeling better than when you came in. This class is a 6-week series, it is expected that if you are registering that you are committing to attending each class. Bring your water bottle, and towel, and wear comfortable clothing you can move in with supportive footwear. Please be current on your COVID-19 Vaccines and plan on wearing face masks while entering and exiting the Family Center.

Dr. Krishnan Patel from the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Radiation Oncology department will join us October 24, 2022 for a discussion about prostate cancer. Dr. Patel is a specialist whose practice and research focuses on technical advances in radiation therapy and men’s quality of life after treatment for prostate cancer. Dr. Patel will plan to present a brief talk on some basics regarding the quality of life comparisons between surgery and radiation therapy, recent advances in radiation therapy and imaging including PSMA PET/CTs, as well as a brief discussion of treatment options for recurrence. He will also highlight open trials at the NCI which you may be interested in participating in. Finally, he will be available for questions which can be pre-submitted to our team at david.mcginness@inova.org or asked via the chat during the Zoom session. As Dr. Patel has an interest in learning more about men’s experiences with their treatment and their quality of life after treatment, questions or comments are strongly encouraged. Our hope is that this event will be of interest to all men who have prostate cancer and spur an interesting discussion.
